Voiceover / Freelancing
So, You Want to Make Money With Your Voice
You’ve probably seen the internet ads “Make Money by Reading Aloud” or “Earn $$$ by Using Your Voice.” We’ve all seen and heard them. Most of those ads make it seem easy to just speak into a mic, and people will pay you hundreds of dollars.
If it were only that easy.
You can make a very good living with voiceover work, but it takes time and effort.
Here are a few basic things that you will need to get started:
1. Coaching — This is the most important aspect. There are techniques you need to learn in order to produce quality work. Anyone can buy a mic and speak into it. Look for a reputable coach. And make sure you do your due diligence before giving them your hard-earned money.
2. Microphone — This might be obvious, but you need a mic in order to record.
3. Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) software — Audacity is a free DAW that you can use. There is also Reaper, Studio One, Adobe Audition to name a few.
4. Quiet space to record in — Now as a beginner you can get away with using a makeshift studio space. I started with a “hobo fort” made of PVC pipe and moving blankets. Now that I’ve been working for a few years at it, I invested in a Whisper Room.
